Abuse in relationships can be physical, emotional, sexual, or financial and all are forms of psychological abuse. Physical Abuse is the use of physical force causing physical and emotional harm. Behaviors such as hitting, choking, and restraining or threatening physical harm are most common. Emotional abuse affects a person's self-esteem and self-worth. Tactics used are criticism aimed at being destructive, demeaning, or humiliating, and manipulating others to build up oneself or feel power over another individual. Sexual Abuse occurs when one person does not consent to any aspect of sexual touch. Sexual abuse occurs between people who have different levels of influence and power: one having more influence and power over the other due to age, education, or social position. Financial Abuse involves taking control of your partner's ability to make, spend or save money.

There are many different constructions of a codependent relationship one including a person's self-worth being defined by the sacrifices they make for their partner, and both partners being dependent upon the other fulfilling some unmet need in the other.
